Student Leadership Opportunities

NMSSJ is committed to developing leadership skills among students through various roles and programs:

1

Student Government

Baraza is a Kiswahili word meaning a public meeting(s) that is used as a platform for creating awareness, responding to issues affecting a given community, sharing vital information, providing citizens with the opportunity to identify and propose solutions to concerns. It is also an avenue for information dissemination. The elders of our community nominate students to represent their cohort.

Student Judicial Council- A group of students that learn and train the community about restorative practices and attempt to support peers overcoming community issues.

2

Peer Mentoring

Through a grant from the Obama Foundation NMSSJ acquired the services of the Ella Baker Foundation to train our sophomore students to be student leaders and mentors. These students will use their what they have learned to train and support rising sophomores to acknowledge their importance and impact on their local community through critical awareness.
